How realistic are the characterisations? What of students – how many people would say that being at uni today is entirely your own choice? Or that some other factor made you do it?
So, is there something in between? Neither of these logics tell us much about how the individual makes sense of their world – in what ways does a person negotiate the structures around them? Social process theories offer some ways of thinking about this issue..

2. Do you think the courts should get tougher?
3. What are some viable alternatives to longer sentences (and do they provide for rehabilitation,
deterrence, and/or retribution)?
4. Regarding the “Three Strikes” provision, should a mandatory life sentence behind bars be the
ultimate sentence for a habitual offender (even if some felonies aren’t really “serious crimes”)?
5. What solutions can you suggest to resolve the problems being encountered in some of these sentences?
6. Is the death penalty unfair, cruel, or unjust? Give details, and descriptions, and name some
incidents. (PERSONAL)
