identify the database correctly
write two to three lines of summary (do not copy/paste from the abstract; this assignment goes through Turnitin)
refer to the notes on the author in the piece or Google each author. Look for them on LinkedIn or Twitter. Share two or three details about his or her background; explain in a sentence or two why these details give him or her credibility on the topic
evaluate the publication; if need be, Google the publication title; describe in a few demographic details (usually occupation, education-level) who the likely audience is for this publication: Who subscribes or reads regularly this kind of magazine, newspaper, or journal?
write two to three sentences about the source’s contribution to your argument; why did you select it over the other choices?
Example:
Paul, John Steven. “Body of Work: Sexuality in Recent American Drama.” Annual Review of Sex Research, vol. 17, no. 1, Dec. 2006, p. 200. MasterFile Complete, search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&AuthType=shib&db=edsgao&AN=edsgcl.165992278&site=eds-live&custid=secc. Accessed 11 Oct. 2021.
In this article, Paul discusses the history of sexuality in drama across American, British, French, Greek, and Japanese stages. He goes into a deeper analysis of higher profile plays from the last twenty years (since the publication date), evaluating their depictions of sexuality. He discusses the ramifications of his analysis and what it means for the future of theatre as well.
Dr. Paul held a position as Program Director of the Lilly Fellows Program in Humanities and the Arts and a Professor in the Department of Theatre at Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Indiana. Since he was involved in both the selection and the production of drama for a university stage, he’s qualified to discuss concerns about sexuality and concerns about censorship particularly.
Established in 1990 and published through 2007, the Annual Review of Sex Research was peer-reviewed and focused its research on broadening knowledge and understanding about human sexuality. Most likely psychologists, sociologists, and therapists make up the audience as well as people in academia related to those fields.
Since my research paper will focus on the societal reaction and censorship to Paula Vogel’s How I Learned to Drive, studying the context of human sexuality on stage helps me place the play in history. Analyzing just how much more shocking Vogel’s choices were compared to what came before it will allow me to be more persuasive in my own argument.
